Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori 2020 I Māori Language Week

Mon 14 September 20

This week is Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori / Māori Language Week and runs from Monday 14 September to Sunday 20 September.

Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori has been celebrated each year from 1975.   Māori Language Day is 14 September and commemorates the presentation of the 1972 Māori language petition to parliament, asking for te reo Māori to be taught in schools

This year’s theme is 'Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’ meaning ‘Let’s make the Māori language strong'.

In recognition of this significant milestone, the country celebrated Te Wā Tuku Reo Māori | The Māori Language Moment with the goal of having 1 million people speaking, singing and celebrating te reo Māori at the same time!  And it was achieved, with over 1 million people celebrating te reo Māori at the same time!  Ka wani kē!

Read more information below about how you can celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori in your learning centres, kōhanga reo, schools, kura and learning communities.
