Ka mutu, kua rongo pea koe i ētahi kōrero, e iwa ngā whetū i te kāhui Matariki, i ētahi atu, e whitu kē.

Matariki and the Māori new year is based around 3 major principles:

  1. Remembrance – Honouring those we have lost since the last rising of Matariki
  2. Celebrating the present –  Getting together to give thanks for what we have
  3. Looking to the future – Looking forward to the promise of a New Year

Arā noa atu ngā kāhui whetū e whakanui nei te Māori puta noa i Aotearoa, ka mutu, he kōrero anō tā rātou mō Matariki. Hei tauira, e hāngai ana tēnei mapi ki ngā kōrero tuku iho o Rangitāne.

E kitea ana te kahu o te pō me ōna kāhui whetū. Kei raro iho nei he whetū hei ako māu. Kimihia tōna tūranga i te mapi me tana nōhanga i te rangi. Pāwhiringia tētahi kāri whetū kia whakawhānuihia ngā kōrero.

Māori across Aotearoa acknowledge many other star clusters and have their own kōrero about Matariki.  For example, this map is based on the oral traditions of Rangitāne.

You can see the night sky laid out with some of the clusters.  Below are the Stars you can learn about.  Find them on the map and see where they are placed in the sky.  Click on a Star card to learn more.
