Confirmed Teacher-Only Days 2023 and 2024
Significant changes are occurring to strengthen curriculum and assessment. To support these changes, four Teacher-Only Days are available for primary and secondary kura and schools - two days in 2023 and two days in 2024.
These Teacher-Only Days will provide kura and schools with dedicated time to understand, prepare and engage with changes across The New Zealand Curriculum refresh, the redesign of Te Marautanga o Aotearoa, and shifts to strengthen NCEA. They are opportunities for kaiako to share ideas and expertise, and to grow their confidence in implementing the upcoming curriculum and assessment changes.
When are they happening?
A Sector Advisory Group will be established to advise on the planning of each Teacher-Only Day. A key consideration of that group is minimising clashes for kura and schools where possible, by choosing dates that avoid regional or cultural events, interschool fixtures, and key NCEA assessment dates.
The first Teacher-Only Day in 2023 must be held in the first two weeks of Term 2: Monday 24 April – Friday 5 May 2023. Kura and schools will be able to pick any date within that two-week window to hold their first Teacher-Only Day, so that they can select the date that best suits them and their hapori.
Timing of the remaining three days will be confirmed and updated here: Teacher-only days 2023 and 2024 (Education in New Zealand).
When planning these dates, we recommend kura and schools coordinate their Teacher-Only Days with other places of learning in the area. This will provide kaiako and leaders with more opportunities for collaboration, and minimise disruption to whanau, particularly for people with children attending more than one kura or school.
What is the focus of each day?
Kura and schools are able to tailor each of their Teacher-Only Days to meet their needs, by focusing on whichever curriculum and assessment changes they choose. Each place of learning will be at a different stage in their change journey, so we encourage them to pick the focus that most matters to them and their kaiako, ākonga, whānau, and hapori.
What resources and supports are available for kura and schools?
By mid-March 2023, we will provide schools and kura with a ‘resource menu’ – a list of available resources and possible focus points to support Teacher-Only Day planning. The goal of this menu is to help kaiako and leaders locate relevant resources to what their selected focus is for the day.
Kura and schools are also able to contact their local Te Mahau office, who will offer pre-planning support in preparation for their Teacher-Only Day. There will be limited opportunity for specialist support on the day where kura and schools identify extra support may be required. Contact information for each local office can be found here: Local Ministry offices – Education in New Zealand.
If kaiako and leaders would like to start their planning before the resource menu is available, a range of existing resources are already available here: Curriculum and assessment changes – Education in New Zealand
