Te Marautanga o Aotearoa Draft Curriculum Content for Te Takanga o Te Wā
Aotearoa New Zealand is on a journey to ensure that all ākonga in our schools and kura learn how our histories help shape our lives.
Te Takanga o Te Wā has been developed to reflect the direction of the redesign of Te Marautanga o Aotearoa. This is the first learning area that will integrate the ākonga-centred conceptual framework of Te Tamaiti Hei Raukura.
Due to the current COVID-19 context, Education Minister Chris Hipkins has agreed to move the timeframe to release the final Te Takanga o Te Wā curriculum content.
While our kura may already have quality learning in place on our country’s histories, most kura will need to make changes to their marau ā-kura to align with Te Takanga o Te Wā content.
Kura will now be expected to implement the new curriculum content from 2023, rather than from 2022 as originally intended. You can find out more at education.govt.nz.

Ko te hiahia ināianei ka whakatinanahia ngā ihirangi marautanga hou e ngā kura atu i te tau 2023, ahakoa i whakarite tuatahitia mō te tau 2022. Ka kitea ētahi atu kōrero i education.govt.nz.
Mō ētahi atu kōrero, kia whai wāhi mai hoki ki ngā rauemi mō te whakaako me te ako i ngā kaupapa Māori me ngā momo tautokotanga ki te ako ā-ngaio, haere ki te kauwhatareo.govt.nz.
Information for kaiako and teachers
For Te Marautanga o Aotearoa the draft content has been developed to align with wider work to update the curriculum. We are still working with the sector to codesign how the framing for Te Marautanga o Aotearoa as an indigenous curriculum will inform the structure and content of learning areas such as Tikanga ā-iwi.
