What we are aiming to achieve

E kitea hoki ngā ākonga me ngā whānau i a rātou anō e whakaatahia ana i roto i ngā ara akoranga, i roto hoki i te marautanga. He taonga hoki ā tātou ākonga, e mārama pai ana ki a mātou te whakaata i tēnei tū āhuatanga i roto i Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.

The process of refreshing the curriculum will be based on work the Ministry of Education has been doing in collaboration with kura, whānau, sector experts and local communities over the past 18 months, which confirmed that significant change is needed for Te Marautanga o Aotearoa to ensure it continues to prepare our ākonga well for their future.

The changes will be phased over four to five years, starting with the new draft curriculum content for Te Takanga o te Wā (Aotearoa New Zealand’s Histories), which will sit as a fifth whenu, in the wāhanga ako for Tikanga ā-Iwi. The new content for Te Takanga o te Wā will be ready for learning in kura in 2022.

The refresh of Te Marautanga o Aotearoa will incorporate a holistic perspective, placing ākonga at the centre of their learning pathway and will ensure important learning that cannot be left to chance is clearly identified. This means the refreshed curriculum will have a different structure than the current format; however, will continue to recognise the important learning and knowledge that sits within learning areas and will allow for an integrated and holistic approach to learning.

Refreshing Te Marautanga o Aotearoa will continue to support kura with the design of their high quality marau ā-kura, ensuring content is relevant to their ākonga, whānau, local contexts, surrounding hapū and iwi. This will also ensure that ākonga and their whānau can see themselves in their learning pathway and experience a curriculum that is meaningful to them and their whānau and responsive to their individual needs. Our ākonga are taonga and we understand the importance of Te Marautanga o Aotearoa reflecting this.
