The pattern inside his korowai is called Rauponga, a whakarei pattern commonly found on whakairo of an ancestor representing the ribs but mainly growth and the connection between the physical realm and the spiritual realm. Green is the main colour used to represent the vast forests and the birds that inhabit it.
