Greetings and welcome to this online presentation. Our topic for discussion is Tohu Ako. I'm Rāwiri Toia. I am one of the developers of the initiative called ‘Tīrewa Ako’. So, welcome all.

The learning indicators which hang from the Tīrewa Marautanga (the proposed direction for national curriclum), the “Tohu Ako” in the diagram, represent the core concepts and important learning in key areas of learning. So, this diagram shows railings, the "Tīrewa Ako" (learning progressions), the Tohu Ako are the things hanging down representing the outcomes and focus of learning.

So, what are Tohu Ako comprised of? There are five parts, or main areas. Here is the summary of those parts.

First is the "Whainga" (objective/goal). The Whāinga is the main indicator, the place that captures a key idea, the most important concept to be learnt in that subject. So that’s the reason it sits at the centre of the Tohu Ako. The things that support, that describe things more broadly all relate directly to the Whāinga.

Second, is "Te Ngako o te Whāinga". Here, you see the outcome of the teaching. So, one part is for the teacher, which indicates, and summarises the teaching that will give effect to the concepts, the ideas, the learning. Another part, or aspect, is for the learner. This tells the learners and their families what things have been learnt, what the essence of the goal is and clarifies what is important to learn about. So, essentially, this is about what's front and centre in this Whāinga (learning objective).

"Te Roanga o ngā Kōrero" provides a broader description of what needs to be taught. It really supports programme planning, by clarifying the expected outcomes and also guiding and supporting the programme planning process. In this section, “Te Roanga o ngā Kōrero”, you might also see teacher guidance and, not directives, but suggestions that will support the process, the progress, the development that occurs through the learning. So, these types of things are what you will find in Te Roanga o ngā Kōrero.

The fourth section is "Hei Tautoko i te Ako". In the past, there have been resources created that support some topics. But there is no single portal, app, or website that pulls all of these resources together in one place to support learning.

So, a learning objective is defined, and all the information directly related to that objective collated together, along with information on where to access relevant resources that support the learning objective and explain teaching approaches in the classroom. So that is a key part. This is the first time that support resources have been directly linked like this within teaching and learning guidance for teaching children in schools.

The final part is called "Kia Mataara". This section, Kia Mataara, isn't found in all Tohu Ako. But it appears when there is something really important, something directly related to teaching and learning that the teacher needs to be aware of. As an example, in Pāngarau, research suggests that there is a particular point in learning when place value is a really important concept. If a learner doesn't master that concept of place value, it becomes really very difficult to achieve at secondary level if the student doesn't understand place value. So, something that the kaiako needs to be vigilant about is not allowing that key concept to be overlooked or not mastered, in case students face problems in Pāngarau when they get to secondary.

So, these are Tohu Ako. Each area of learning has these types of indicators. And, soon, Te Takanga o te Wā will be introduced as an area of learning. On a Tīrewa Ako called Te “Takanga o te Wā”, Tohu Ako (indicators of learning) will hang, guiding the progress and development of learning in schools.

So, be steadfast in your learning at the moment. Be confident to engage, to analyse, to dig into the information that is being provided about this really exciting initiative, about curriculum.
