Matariki and the Māori new year is based around 3 major principles:

  1. Remembrance – Honouring those we have lost since the last rising of Matariki
  2. Celebrating the present –  Getting together to give thanks for what we have
  3. Looking to the future – Looking forward to the promise of a New Year

We invite you to explore the Māori New Year through these learning resources created as part of the Ministry of Education’s work to support a modern acknowledgement of Matariki as a public holiday by increasing awareness and appreciation of Matariki. The resources support the work of the Matariki Advisory Group, which was established to determine when and how Aotearoa will celebrate Matariki together as a public holiday from 2022.
